Appalachian Spring: Suite (1945)
The program opens with Maurice Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin, a beautifully refined tribute to French baroque music, showcasing Ravel’s signature elegance and precision. This is followed by the poignant Intermezzo from Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana, a piece renowned for its sweeping romanticism and deep emotional resonance.
A highlight of the afternoon will be the performance by Dayou Kim, winner of the 2024 CCC Toronto International Music Festival Concerto Competition. The young virtuoso will take center stage for the exquisite first movement of Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54, a masterpiece that seamlessly blends lyrical beauty with fiery passion.
After intermission, the program continues with Alexina Louie’s Music for a Celebration (1990), a dynamic and exuberant work by one of Canada’s most celebrated composers. Finally, the orchestra will present Aaron Copland’s iconic Appalachian Spring: Suite (1945). This Pulitzer Prize-winning composition, with its folk-inspired themes and warm, open harmonies, paints a musical portrait of hope and renewal, making it a fitting conclusion to an afternoon of inspiring music.
